Are you smarter than a 5th grader?
I am analyzing a video titled “What is CRISPR”, created by Paul Andersen, published by Bozeman Science, a channel dedicated to science and technology. Unlike previous sources of information this video expanded my technical knowledge on the subject. Videos on Clustered, Regularly-Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, or CRISPR and gene editing tend to be either ungraspable in technical regard, or too simple. The creator, Paul Andersen explains the technology as if it was being explained in a university level course on the subject and not like as if I was in fifth grade. The video combined the best of both worlds, instead of presenting information to a depth that is either too hard or too easy to grasp, draws a middle ground, a beautiful compromise. Previous sources on this topic made it possible for me to understand the practical impacts of genetic editing technology, and the societal impacts. This video allowed me to understand the bare, objective, and science based facts of the technology, and the biochemical processes of which the technology acts on, on a cellular level. Instead of telling me what CRISPR WILL do, the creator Paul, gives me the tools to understand the technology, and realize the potential benefits myself.
This video also contained less “noise” of information, less sensationalization and wasn’t dumbed down with cartoony animations or pictures. Personally, this approach of content creation is more appealing to me, than having information shovel fed into my brain. The video itself uses markedly less ethos appeal. The creator of the video, who is also narrating the video, speaks in a very calm, and almost monotonous way. The diction is also similar, straying away from words that would otherwise sully a sound argument. Instead of imposing ideas, and appealing to emotions, the video does a very good job of simply explaining. Unlike in the other videos on youtube on this subject, and youtube videos in general, the video has very detailed source links to where the information in the video was obtained.
A key trend that I have observed in the time that I have been reading and analyzing articles related to genetic engineering is that the sources of information are heavily dumbed down. Reason being is that in this digital age, the more graspable a certain product/article is, the more it sells. Not all sources of information guilty of this by any means, but the topic, genetic engineering, seems to be overwhelmed by this. Understanding that having access to free information and articles comes at a cost has helped me broaden my perspective on where and how I consume information. Recent statistics have shown, that a great majority of millennials get their news from facebook, and other social media. Analyzing videos like the one Bozeman science put out has equipped me with the tools to not be hypnotised by the flashy, colorful and attention-grabbing news that is out there.
