SHEconomics 2023: Empowering Women in Entrepreneurship #SHEtoo

The numbers don’t lie! Top research studies measuring the results of all-male vs. teams with at least one woman — as a founder, co-founder, director, or senior executive — universally concluded that women’s involvement improves the results, whether measuring ROI, revenue, profits, profit margins, capital efficiency, productivity, or valuations. The highly respected institutions conducting the research — McKinsey, BCG, Kauffman Foundation, MSCI, PIIE, First Round, Illuminate, Pitchbook, and more — all agree on the value and power of having diversity in corporate leadership.

Yet, the venture industry’s abysmal record of funding teams with at least one woman founder or co-founder fell from 2.2% of total investments in 2019 to a new low of 1.9%, reported in January 2023. BCG estimated that $5T of GDP is lost due to the lack of support for women founders and their startups. The US economy needs that GDP now more than ever, and it’s time to stop wasting one of our most valuable resources — innovative women leaders.

The industry has a giant disconnect by operating in opposition to all of the research. Clearly, there are significant biases at work demanding discourse to make visible these otherwise insidious facts. Radivision is sharing these critical research results and shining the light on the many amazing organizations working to support women’s success — beginning with our March 2023 Editorial Production, SHEconomics: Empowering Women in Entrepreneurship, live now on Radivision.com.

Be inspired by the excellent work of these organizations, large or small, and how each uniquely contributes to empowering women in entrepreneurship. From access to tech education to startup funding, to mentorship and masterclasses, to building communities, scaling operations, and more — these organizations are delivering much-needed support. As the world transitions from the Industrial into the Entrepreneurial Revolution, we must support our sisters, daughters, and mothers, as they work hard to grow businesses, of which 98.1% will be rejected for venture funding.

Women founders are forced to tackle additional challenges than their male counterparts, similar to Ginger Rogers, the partner of the famous 20th-century dancer Fred Astaire, who danced every step that Fred did but “backwards and in heels” — as memorialized in Bob Thave’s cartoon below. As if overcoming the industry’s 90% unfunded rate, or 90% failure rate aren’t enough, women founders face additional startup challenges due to less funding, support, and recognition, while pushing against significant conscious and unconscious bias headwinds.
