The Importance of Going Out (Into Nature)
Normal Sunday. Wake up mildly hungover from an unnecessary but very well-conditioned night out drinking. I don’t even check my bank account because I already know I should have spent that money better. It’s ok, I’m young, and I can still mistakes. Financial Mistakes.
So, what brings me to write this today is how important I think it is to get out of your routine and take some time to connect with nature. It really does not matter where you find yourself in the world, the important thing is to disconnect from the places you go all the time and go somewhere new.
I went on a hike by the coast with a friend today. I was initially uncertain if it was a good choice on my end since I haven’t gone hiking in years. Bonkers. As soon as we got there, it was great. The windy and cloudy weather added an extra layer of mud everywhere we walked by, making it an actual hike that made you focus on your steps and not on what you were supposed to be doing on a Sunday. We talked, shared some really cool life experiences, and also walked in silence, which is a great introspective exercise if you don’t already do it (listening to music is not silence). After 4 hours we had made our way out to the coast and back, and were both carrying renewed mental energy to prepare for next week.
What I got out of was a great way to start my Sunday, share some really interesting conversations with my friend, and come back mentally renewed with more ideas and things that I needed to think a little bit more about. The last one is particularly important to fight mental strains of the week, in particular when you are handling a stressful and disorganized phase at work. Nature has an ability to bring us back to an objective reality that sometimes tends to fade away. The view, the sounds, and the smell of it all provide the free-est detox that you could ask for. It also helps with disconnecting you from your mobile life, and appreciate a good physical conversation.
Make taking care of yourself mentally a priority in your life, and don’t throw to a side the importance of going out, into nature.
