As a researcher I’d reply — of course research was necessary! But really, the goal of the research here wasn’t to simply determine that one version was better than another version (something like an A/B test). This study was instead focused on identifying the characteristics of design that led to the most usable, most beautiful experiences. We didn’t do this study to shine a light on a single text field, saying “that’s the one!” Instead, we were hoping that the study results would shine a light more broadly on the possible design space, saying, “focus here, this is where we can find something that really works.”
