A standalone Google Inbox was a compromise between Googlers who wanted it to replace Gmail and Googlers who thought it was bad for ordinary users. Here’s a good summary of the history: https://techcrunch.com/2014/11/16/why-did-google-decide-to-split-inbox-from-gmail/

I am a very happy user of Inbox so I’m happy to see this new feature in Basecamp!
