New Force in Nepal

After the historic victory of the AAP in the Delhi elections, there have been major discussions regarding the emergence of a potential new force which would transform Nepal probably into Switzerland as politicians here say.

If history is any indication, we have seen many of these new forces already in the country. Ironically the first such force is currently the largest party in the Constitution Assembly and its leader is the Prime minister of the country. This force started in the fine morning of January 25, 1947 by some energetic people who promised to even die for the betterment of the country. The overthrow of the Ranas may have been their major achievement but I do not see other aspects that they could be really proud of.

On September 15, 1949, just two years after the establishment of the first new force, we already had a “new force”. The Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), founded by Mr. Pushpa Lal Shrestha, is the second largest party in the current constitution assembly. I do not exactly know as to what their major achievement have been except the old age pension plan as bragged by many CPN politicians.

Later on, Late King Mahendra started yet another “new force” on 15 December 1960 suspending the constitution, dissolving the parliament and dismissing the cabinet. He imposed a direct rule and imprisoned the then prime minister, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala. One could argue but this probably is the best “new force” Nepal has ever seen. The development made by this force cannot be matched with any other force till date. However, it slowly failed with the death of King Mahendra at the hands of CIA agent John Coapman during a hunting trip in Chitwan.

1994 ushered in a new force Nepal had ever seen. A civil war broke out killing almost 18,000 people over the period of 10 years. Their major achievement was probably the overthrowing of the King.

Now in 2015, we are still discussing about a “new force”. No one can deny all these forces of the past- all started with good intention. I believe Mr. KP Oli was willing to die for the country when he joined the communist part. The story of Mr. Pushpa Kamal Dahal is not much different as the civil war is still fresh in our minds. What happened here? I will tell you what happened, India happened. Those suckers never want our country to be prosperous.

I do not know if yet another force is really the thing this country needs, but if it is to be started their approach must be drastically different from the forces from the past. In my opinion this force should handle India a lot better than the earlier forces. In my opinion an approach where India’s interest is the primary focus and welfare of Nepalese as the byproduct could be a not so popular but a good approach, may be something like Bhutan. After all happiness of the citizen is all that counts, isn't it?
