Do you think staunch Jim Crow-era racist and Confederate nostalgic Asa Earl Carter’s only motivation for claiming Cherokee heritage, and writing a pseudonymous book celebrating it, was his abiding and innocent interest in his own family history and the marvels of genetic memory? I personally think it had much more to do with racial and political ideology than private curiosity. That’s my point here: there is an ideology at work in the ubiquity and duration of Cherokee heritage claims by Southern whites.
