Biswa Kalyan Rath has been a constant source of inspiration for the Jesters — be it his comedic style or delivery. Right from the time he appeared on Pretentious Movie Reviews, we have all been guilty of binging on his content on YouTube.

He has been one of the first faces who made our home-grown stand-up comedy cool and continues to do so. Hence, we write this appreciation post as not just ardent fans but true connoisseurs of the art.

Biswa started out as his laid back self in Pretentious Movie Review. The show soon amassed a fan following because of it’s unique take on old Bollywood Movies and the polar opposite characters of Kanan Gill and Biswa. His brand of humour combined with a characteristic no nonsense delivery pummeled his popularity from reel to real. He was soon touring the country, performing stand up comedy in all major cities.

All of us had seen him live so we pondered about what really made him tick. We realized that it was his perspective towards comedy in general. The stories seemed common place, as if taken out of a day of your lives yet somehow made you laugh and think at the same time. When he talked about extroverts being over-enthusiastic about festivals, you know you were one of them or had been best friends with.
When he randomly broke into Oriya on stage, you also went ‘Jibono ta dukkho..!’ even if you understood only ten percent of the sentence. He broke down and then weaved back his content so well that the audience never knew where time flew.

His self-deprecating, slice-of-life anecdotes sprinkled with blatant disregard towards well, everything makes him the renegade comedienne India can’t get enough of!

P.S. Biggest takeaway for budding Jesters? A mast admi always laughs at his own jokes, even if no one else does!
