How Indexing In The Era Of eBooks Can Enhance Its Potential
Reading has definitely found a new meaning in the age of eBooks and audiobooks. With sites like Medialid that provide subscribers access to testimonials, unlimited books, and so much more, anytime, anywhere, the reading experience has definitely been enhanced.
Many aspects of how a book is written and published have undergone a drastic change. And, one of the major changes has been in how indexes are used in eBooks.
One of the challenges here is that most eBooks don’t have indexes. Fiction represents a large chunk of eBook sales and these books often do not benefit from an index, and the same holds true for certain types of non-fiction books. Though it may not be possible to completely duplicate the human element in a computer-generated index, exceptional value can be added through automated text analysis, algorithms, and the resulting hashtags.
When the reader taps a phrase on their device, it shows the reader occurrences of that phrase in the book. But, why should the results be limited to the book that the person is reading, especially, if the author has few other titles on that topic or similar topics? If those references and excerpts are available via the pop-up e-index, then, if the reader has bought those books, they can directly jump to the pages within them. These entries also serve as a discovery and marketing vehicle, encouraging the reader to purchase other titles.
A high-speed parsing tool that analyzes the content and creates initial entries across all books could be built into the eBook reader application. This will ensure that readers are not stuck with worthless content and can fully experience all the potential a digital book has to offer.
