What is 360 Degree Video?

360-degree videos, also known as immersive videos or spherical video, are video recordings where a view in every direction is recorded at the same time, the shot is made using an omnidirectional camera or a collection of cameras mounted in a special Rig. Take note that when working with the second method also known as video stitching, this separate footage is merged together into one spherical video piece, and the color and contrast of each shot is calibrated to be consistent with the others. With some of the commercial cameras that can be find in the market is the camera itself that makes the stitching process.

Keep in mind that there are two types of videos, monoscopic (2D) and stereoscopic video (3D). Most of the 360-degree video we see today is monoscopic, meaning that it is viewed as a flat image on a singular surface.

The 360-degree video, a term that is gaining popularity every day, was spread in the world by youtube in march of 2015 when for the first time users of the platform had the to view and upload 360-degree videos. With the launch of the platform YouTube gained a big market advantage, since it was not until 6 months after Facebook take the second move to integrate 360-degree videos in the social platform and since then we have seen so many newcomers and companies

How does 360° video work?

The simple action does not take you to a complex scenario, its just as simply as take multiple cameras and you give them an overlapping field of view. You can then be given the chance to record a seamless 360x 180 view and degree field. As you could see there are plenty of new cameras, even this year we saw some pretty good new models from the regular brands and there will be more by the endo of the year.

The most common way to shot for many time was the Go Pro cameras, using various cameras in a rigs it´s possible to get a high quality product. Of course, at the end of the day, as long as you have a lot of cameras with a lot of overlapping fields of view, you will be able to transform your video into a 360° panoramic shot without compromising the experience for your user at all.

Publishing a 360 degree video

As we told before youtube was the first who step in the 360 world In march 2015, when the leader video platform officially launched the ability for users to view and upload 360-degree videos, 6 months after the move from youtube facebook led his own idea of social sharing and start using the potential of 360 video, in words of Mark Zuckerberg “This opens new ways of sharing experiences and makes you feel like you’re part of what you’re watching. It’s a step towards even more immersive experiences Today there are many platforms ways of upload, play and share 360-videos and there are more to come. One of the last platform was Vimeo, the original platform for video hosting, launched support for 360-degree video in March, 2017.

So how do you go ahead and upload the video you want to social media? All you have to do is upload it. If you have shot the video correctly then social media will recognise this and the site you choose will automatically cater it to meet the needs of your audience. Of course, the most important thing that you need to do is make sure that your video is good quality. If your cameras are shooting in a lower level of quality then this can affect the whole experience and it really is something that you will want to avoid at all times. That being said, if the people who are going to be viewing your video have computers with a lower spec, or if they don’t have a solid internet connection then this will automatically lower the quality for them, but the people who do have better computers will still be able to view it in stunning 1080P.
