Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air in and out of the lungs. They become even more swollen and filled with mucus. This makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

Patients may have all of these symptoms or only a few and its severity varies from person to person. The estimations show that about 25,000,000 million people have asthma in the United States and asthma causes an average of over 14,000,000 office visits each year along with 2,000,000 emergency room visits. Mortality rate due to asthma reaches thousands over year which can be prevented only through proper medical care.

Early symptoms of asthma includes:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Lack of sleep
  • Allergies
  • Extreme fatigue after activity
  • Retractions
  • Discoloration in nails and lips
  • Anxiety symptoms

Different types of asthma includes:

  • Exercise-induced asthma: For many asthma sufferers, timing of these symptoms is closely related to physical activity. And, some otherwise healthy people can develop asthma symptoms only when exercising. In order to recover from it, patients will need to carry an Albuterol inhaler with them.
  • Allergic asthma: If one suffers from allergic asthma, his symptoms are caused by an allergic reaction when they come into contact with an allergen. Common allergens include pollen, house dust, mites etc….
  • Cough-Variant asthma: Cough-variant asthma is a type of asthma in which the main symptom is a dry, persistent cough. People with cough-variant asthma often have no other “classic”asthma symptoms, such as wheezing or shortness of breath.
  • Occupational asthma: Occupational asthma is asthma caused by exposure to substances in the workplace.

Usually patients who are farmers, painters, hairdressers, construction workers etc are susceptible to this type of asthma.
