All about Anesthesia

Anesthesia is primarily required to control or subside pain or perform a surgery. The medicines used for the same are caked anesthetics.

Anesthesia can be of one of the following kinds:

1- Local anesthesia
It is a shot of anesthesia given on a particular part of a body to make only that spot numb. A person’s whole body except the part where be gets local anesthesia is up and about.

2- Regional anesthesia

This is used to cover a larger part of your body. There are two kinds of general anesthesia:

· Peripheral nerve blocks- mostly used on legs, arms, face, feet and hands this anesthesia is used to block a specific or a group of nerves.

· Epidural and spinal anesthesia

This is given near the spinal chord and blocks pain from that entire region like hips, belly and legs.

3- General anesthesia
This effects the brain and makes the whole body unconscious. This is given to perform major surgeries.

So how is it decided which type of anesthesia is to be given to whom?

· what type of anesthesia you get is decided by your record of previous surgeries.

· if anesthesia reacted on any family member previously.

· it is also decided by the kind of surgery one has to undergo. Some major surgeries can’t be done without general anesthesia.

· what your EKG and ECG reports say also determine the kind of anesthesia you will get.

After effects of anesthesia:

If a person is in good health anesthesia hardly has any side effect. People with lung diseases, who smoke or drink may experience stronger side effects of anesthesia.
Besides this the water effects totally depend on the kind of anesthesia you get your age, your health and your tolerance of certain medicines.

· Cases of heart problems, pneumonia, nausea and sore throat have been reported after general anesthesia.

· Sometimes in case of increased doses of local anesthesia, the anesthetic can go into the rest of the body affecting your brain or heart.

· Headaches after spinal anesthesia may occur.

Preparing for anesthesia
Well preparing for anesthesia is simple stay calm and cool and don’t be foolish enough to think of driving back on your own. Try some meditation technique to stay calm and arrange for someone to drop you home.

Under and after anesthesia
Once you are given anesthesia you will be closely monitored by a specialist. Your heart rate, breathing, blood pressure and other vital functions will be closely monitored. To keep your away from pain the specialist will
keep injecting anesthesia as and when required throughout the surgery.

Once the surgery is done the injection of anesthesia will stop and you’ll be shifted to recover room. Different people recovery differently each at his/her own pace.

Numbness, nausea, shivers and other such minute post effects of anesthesia may be experienced for a short while.
