Mantras can be a powerful way to focus your mind and reach higher meditative states. Focusing your mind (concentration) is dharana. The state of flow is the maturation of concentration, called dhyana, and the state of unity, what you call ‘meditative absorption,’ is samadhi. Samadhi is a lot more than just focusing your mind. It is the feeling of oneness with all.
