What are the different Tests included in Health Checkup Packages?

There is a famous saying ‘Prevention is better than cure.’ To lead a healthy life, it is crucial to eat a balanced diet, exercise, avoid stress and get a health checkup done regularly. Yes, you heard it right! Most people think that just by taking care of diet and being physically active, they can get a healthy and a fit body. Well, they are not entirely wrong; however one cannot deny that health declines with time and thus one must go for a regular health checkup to detect diseases at an early stage. There are many health checkup packages which include a number of tests that can help you know your health state.

Few common tests included in Health Checkup Packages are mentioned below:

1. Blood Sugar Test

A blood sugar test is done to measure the amount of a sugar called glucose in the blood. Glucose is a primary source of energy for most cells of the body. Carbohydrates which are present in fruits, bread, pasta and rice turn into glucose quickly which elevates the level of blood glucose in the body.

Those who have Diabetes need to check their blood sugar levels regularly as the results help the Doctor to provide medications and to avoid diabetes complications.

2. Thyroid Test

Thyroid Function Tests include a range of blood tests which are done to screen for thyroid problems and see how well the thyroid gland is working. These tests include T3, T4 and TSH.

T3 tests- A T3 test is done to measure the level of triiodothyronine, which is a thyroid hormone. This test is done to check the severity of Hyperthyroidism (a medical condition characterized by overproduction of thyroid hormones). This test is also done to confirm the diagnosis of Hyperthyroidism.

T4 tests- T4 test is also known as thyroxine test and is done to see if there is over production or under production of thyroid hormones due to the imbalance of the pituitary gland or thyroid gland itself. The results of TSH test and T4 test together helps the Doctor to know if the thyroid gland is working or not.

TSH test- This test is done to screen for Hypothyroidism (a health condition that occurs as a result of low production of thyroid hormones in the body) and Hyperthyroidism (a medical condition that occurs as a result of high production of thyroid hormones in the body). Both these conditions lead to several health consequences and therefore this test is included in several Health Checkup Packages.

3. Liver Function Test

This is another test which is included in several health checkup packages. Liver Function tests help in determining how well your liver is functioning by measuring the levels of liver enzymes, proteins or bilirubin in your blood.

A liver function test is done to screen for liver diseases and infections; monitor the efficiency of treatment which is being given to cure liver disease; measure the degree of scarring on the liver; and to detect the side effects of medications which are known to affect the liver.

The common liver tests include:

Alanine Transaminase (ALT) Test-Alanine transaminase (ALT) is used by the human body to metabolize protein. High levels of ALT in the blood indicate that the liver is not functioning properly or is damaged.

Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) Test- Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is another enzyme which is found in several parts of the body, including the heart, liver, and muscles. Doctors check AST levels along with ALT levels to confirm the diagnosis. A high result on AST might indicate problems with the liver.

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) Test- ALP is an enzyme present in bones, bile ducts and the liver. If the level of ALP is high in the body, it might indicate liver damage, bone disease or blockage of the bile ducts. Pregnant women have high amount of ALP in their body; also kids and adolescents may have high levels of ALP because their bones are growing.

Albumin Test- One of the major proteins made by the liver is albumin which performs various important bodily functions. This test measures whether the liver is making this protein properly or not. A low result on this test indicates that the liver is not functioning properly.

Bilirubin Test- Bilirubin is a waste product which is processed by the liver. When the liver is damaged, it is not able to process bilirubin properly, and thus a high level of bilirubin in the blood indicates that the liver is not working properly.

4. CRP (C — reactive protein) Test

CRP is a substance which is produced by the liver and is a blood test marker for inflammation in the body. Some of the other names of CRP are high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and ultra-sensitive C-reactive protein (us-CRP). A high result on this test indicates inflammation in the body which can occur due to a variety of conditions, including infection and cancer. High levels of CRP can be an indication of inflammation in the arteries of the heart too.

It is a routine test which is helpful in screening for heart diseases, stroke and high cholesterol.

5. Urine test

A urine test is simply an analysis of the urine and includes checking different components of urine. It is a regular test which is done to find the cause of the symptoms. A urine test can help Doctor give information about the patient’s health and the health complications. This test is done by collecting the sample of urine from the patient in a specimen cup and then this sample is analysed in the lab. This test is also included in many health checkup packages as this is done as a routine test for several health problems.

Going for a regular health checkup is indeed a wise choice as you get so many tests under one package; you can even select from a wide list of health checkup packages.
