Thanks for this amazing analysis and all the work that went into it. This has been a problem for a long time that I think everyone suspected, but couldn’t confirm, and of course it is always awkward to call out another referee (especially more experienced referee) for making JLP mistakes.

I’m a supporter of completely removing JLPs — proposals to modify the JLP rules all seem to move the “confusion” to another place rather than resolve the fundamental issues you point out here and in the longer post. I hope to see that in a future rules update!
