Gabriel Fauré was a famous French composer (1845–1924). He composed his first song at the age of sixteen and went on to influence many composers in the 20th century.

His musical piece Sicilienne, Op. 78, is brief, but haunting. Its effect is most keenly felt at times when all else is relatively silent: late at night or early in the morning.

There is value in listening to haunting melodies such as these. You cannot engage with them superficially because they tug at your heartstrings and force you to stop doing whatever you are. The result is that you can no longer dodge deep internal questions through incessant action. You are forced to down your tools — your mop, your pen, your pan, or whatever it was that was keeping you occupied- and sit still and listen. Listen to the song, and to yourself.

After listening to the musical piece, I read the comments under the video. The music evoked bittersweet memories of the past in some and hopes for a warm future in others. Above all, the comments reminded me of the universality of human experiences.

It is beautiful music; I hope you give it a try.
