Italy is one of the top tourist destinations in Europe known for its countless magnificent cities, great weather and welcoming people. One of the main Italian ports on the Adriatic Sea, Ancona has recently become a popular sightseeing place, particularly with incoming cruise passengers. The city is worth visiting not only because it has excellent connections with Loreto and other nearby locations, but also because of the city’s own heritage and beautiful beaches that will make your sightseeing in Ancona an unforgettable experience.

First of all, the gorgeous Cathedral di San Ciriaco alone is worth the trip to the Italian seaport — built in 1017, it is a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture. Most importantly, the Ancona Cathedral offers spectacular views over the city, its port, and the Adriatic Sea. Another landmark that allows you to adore panoramic views is the Monumento ai Caduti, or the Passetto Monument as called by the locals. Built during the 1930s as a World War I memorial, it is praised for an excellent location but disliked by some for the fascist style of decoration. Nevertheless, being able to see the Croatian coast can impress even the most sceptical travellers.

For those interested in exploring Italian culture more profoundly, Ancona offers the National Archaeological Museum. In this prestigious palace you can find artefacts ranging from the Paleolithic era to the Early Middle Ages, and learn more about the Marche region where the excavations took place. Museo Diocesano, situated on the left of the cathedral, is another museum that holds works of art from several churches that were destroyed during numerous bombings of World War II.

Finally, after sightseeing in Ancona, it is absolutely necessary to have a swim in the Adriatic Sea and relax on a quiet beach in Mezzavalle. Accessible only by a steep path, it rewards the most persistent visitors with yet one more beautiful view of clear water and a white sand coast.
