Local Businesses Should Keyword Stuff the Title and Description Tags — No BS

I subscribe to countless online marketing newsletters. From Neil Patel’s Quick Sprout blog to Black Hat World. I don’t discriminate. I love new ideas to try out, no matter where I find them. And I’ve tried them all. Private blog networks. Guest blogging. Article submission sites (a long time ago, don’t judge me). The list really does go on and on.

I can tell you, the same SEO rules do not apply across the board. When it comes to title and description tags, I’ve seen it repeated over and over again, “Do NOT use the same keyword in the title AND description! Use synonyms!” or “Focus on TOPICS and LONG TAIL KEYWORDS!” Been there, done that. Stop yelling at me SEO guru blogger. They don’t work for local businesses.

I’m home alone and tired of SEO techniques failing over and over!

Maybe I shouldn’t say “they don’t work” because I don’t know if these particular techniques work for other local businesses. I can only speak from experience. And in my experience working with many small companies, synonyms mean diddly-squat unless customers use it to find the services or products offered. Keyword stuff those titles and descriptions, baby!

Let’s look at an example, shall we? Google “eye doctor [city near you]” The first 2 or 3 results have a lot of “eye” keywords, no? There are probably at least two in the title and maybe 2 or 3 more in the description. Now find one that only uses “eye” in the title and maybe the word “vision” or “optometrist” as a synonym. They are below the companies that have an overflow of “eyes”, no? Just to be clear, I’m not counting Yelp or Healthgrades or any other directory/review site. I’m starting at the company websites.

Take a look at the first page of Google when I search “eye doctor Greensboro NC”

Top 2 have 6 and 5 “eyes” while the last 2 have 2 and 3 “eyes”.

After extensive research on my end, I’ve tested this with my own clients. I’ve found out, I’m right. Google doesn’t seem to care much when a search is conducted with a city name either before or after the keyword. And I think I know why.

Take the city of Greensboro for example. The population is around 287,000. Out of those, about 88% use the internet. Out of those 253,000 people, how many do you think search “eye doctor Greensboro NC” a month? According to various keyword research tools, about 260. That’s it. I know the competition is fierce for those 260 searches but not as fierce as say, “americas best eyeglasses”. That gets about 33,000 nationwide searches a month.

I’m only speculating, but I believe Google just doesn’t care as much for local terms as they do for nationwide popular terms. They have a monopoly on the Maps industry (I love iPhones but Apple Maps ain’t got nothing on Google Maps). If you have a Google My Business listing that’s optimized correctly, you will get traffic and calls for free from Google Maps.

Try it. Remember, I only mentioned keyword stuffing the title and description tags, not your content. Google may not care too much about the tags but it will definitely care if you keyword stuff your content. Why? Who the hell knows.
