Birthdays! I love Birthdays, both celebrating my own and those of other people. They’re a great day to remember that the world is a different (and better!) place because you’re in it.
There are many great ways to celebrate birthdays. Parties, going out for dinner, and having cake tend to be the most popular. I’d like to suggest something different …
Create and Give.
I’m an author, so creating is part of my everyday life. No matter what your occupation is, your presence creates a unique impact on the world. Birthdays can be a great time to celebrate this act of creating, through painting, drawing, writing a poem, experimenting in the kitchen, composing a song, or dreaming up a new dance. Whatever your interests are, there’s sure to be some element of creation that you can have fun with.
The second part of the new way to celebrate your birthday is giving. As children, we learn that our birthdays are times to receive presents from the people who love us. While that remains true as we get older, we receive an all new present: the luxury of knowing the joy of giving to others. Give away copies of your work to reach a new audience, if you’re an author like me, or make a donation to your favorite charity (Perhaps, you want to pick a meaningful number, like $1 for every year you are old), or simply give the gift of time by helping a neighbor or a stranger. However you choose to give, your birthday is a wonderful time to remember that your life is a gift to the world. It is a better place because you are here and you may just have an extra happy birthday by celebrating the good you can bring to the world.
If today is your birthday, Happy Birthday! And if it’s not, Happy Unbirthday!
