Lord, where do I jump in on this thread tree? The root, I guess. Here’s my take:

Love is feeling-based. It is aspirational and covers a bucketload of otherwise more nuanced emotions. (Believe me, I’ve been on the receiving end of some sick definitions of love that had nothing to do with respect or fairness. So there’s that.)

Using love to address the concept of privilege is going to work for some people, the people who hold the universal love of humankind as one of their aspirations. That’s a great group, but hardly everyone.

Respect and fairness are values. They set boundaries on behavior. They are principles of a functional democracy, and many can understand that.

I can respect (at least the personhood, if not the behavior or ideas of— let’s think trolls here) people for whom I have no love and treat them fairly, because I believe in applying the values of respect and fairness universally. So I think H. Nemesis Nyx is on to something here.
