Asking “How are you” in passing, is just another way to say “Hello.”

True quote from an Eastern European student who was working in my town as a grocery store cashier for the summer. As a clerk, she had the opportunity to watch a lot of social interactions of the “Hi! How are you?” “Fine. And you?” variety. She was amazed that Americans always answered, “Fine.”
