So true. I have never felt that any party captured my political personality/belief system/whatever you want to call it.
I operate on a few principles:
Everyone should be able to live the way they wish and do what they want to do as long as that doesn’t cause harm to anyone or property (public, such as air or water, or private). — Harm is the operative word here. Some actions (or inactions) do cause harm, and this is the reason for laws.
There are some things we do better together — Defense and infrastructure are good examples of these, and this is the point of civilization and taxes.
We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. — We have a duty not to leave the weak and sick by the roadside, and this is the point of a social safety net.
The moral code of any one religion should not be used to govern all people. — We need to separate church and state. I wish we could also separate church and hate, but this might be too much to ask.
(I’m sure there are more, but I can’t think of them right now.)
So what am I?
The only reason I am registered to a party is because I believe that participation in the primary process is important, perhaps more important than in the general election. I see no point in maintaining a moral purity by standing outside the system.
I have changed party registration several times in order to vote for the primary candidate I thought best suited to be president.
So, anyway, a big YES to non-binary thinking.
