Well said, Mike.
I didn’t mean to imply that work was all meant to be drudgery. But, I do find that my various paid gigs (as an architect, dance instructor, and cancer survivor fitness coach) are 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration and responsibility. The same is true for most of my volunteer work, civic and non-profit. Hence the “work” moniker. Me taking a dance class = fun. Me teaching a dance class = work.
The underlying truth that unifies all these forms of work is that I can easily see the positive impact I am making through my efforts. Writing is different. It follows the 10% inspiration/90% perspiration formula, hence work. But, I do it solo. I can’t see how what I am doing is affecting others. So I find it hard to convince my self that what I am doing is worthwhile.
