Yes, state stores = state liquor stores. This answer was a bit of a joke, but also serious, as these are two revenue streams for states that have them.

We used to have state stores in Maine and there was a huge amount of hilarity when, during a past budget crisis, all government offices were closed one day per week to save money. But, the state stores were also closed, much to the majority’s annoyance.

“Why’d they shut down the packie*? That’s the only arm of the state that makes money,” people would crack.

(*packie: short for “package store”)
