It might seem, we are talking about Kanyakumari, but we are about to explore the actual southernmost tip of India which is called Indira Point located on Nicobar Island.

Nestled with lush rainforests of the Great archipelago, it is time you know some interesting insights about Indira Point. Indira Point is located on the Campbell Bay, a village known as Mini Punjab.

The place is named so because of a Gurdwara that is established there. It is believed that Campbell Bay is one of the mysterious places within India.

However, reports suggest that it is one of the few places in the Great Nicobar that is open for visitors to visit. Indira Point is a majestic beach and is home to one of the most wonderful lighthouses of the world.

A lot of travellers have not explored too many lighthouses and, thus, this point is an exclusive treat for the eyes. Once you are at the beach surrounded by water on one side and forests on the other, you can feel the picturesque beauty of the island.

What is Indira Point?

Indira Point is called the southern tip of the Indian Ocean island of the Great Nicobar, in the Nicobar Islands south of Burma. It was formerly known as the Pygmalion Point and was renamed in the honour of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It is located 540 km from the capital city of Port Blair.

Indira Point is the southernmost point of Indian Territory. It’s latitudinal and longitudinal extent is 6.780621°N 93.8258513°E. Due to the 2004 Tsunami Indira Point got partially submerged. There is a lighthouse which is still operational. The Indira Point lighthouse was commissioned during the year 1972 on 30th April.

How To Reach Indira Point?

By Air: The closest airport for Indira Point is in Port Blair, Veer Savarkar International Airport, from where you can arrive at the point on a Pawanhans, a premier national helicopter providing inter-island services in the region. The ticket prices vary from season to season.

By Rail: The closest railway station to Indira Point is in Chennai, about 1300km from Port Blair. The fastest way mostly preferred by the visitors is by air.

By Road: There is no road connectivity from the capital city of Port Blair to Indira Point. However, there are reports of having a 56 km roadway connection that is being developed between the Campbell Bay’s Zero Point to Indira Point.
