Really interesting. Earlier this month Matt Galligan noted that facebook has allowed users to start following authors instead of following the publication they wrote for, writing that “Facebook is disintermediating the publisher altogether.” Additionally, Ev Williams has often noted that Medium is a network not a publishing tool. With the spin-off of Matter and this direction of prioritizing the creators to develop different media products under their own brands, it’s starting to seem like people are the new publications.
I wrote about this in response to Matt’s first post, but it’s worth revisiting. Curious: What do you think this means for the future of publications? Will the box that holds the content become less important than the person who creates it? Will publications disappear completely?
