Washington D.C. — The Political Capital of the World (A Photo Essay)

Washington D.C., also referred to as the District of Columbia, is the Capital of the United States. Founded in 1700, the city is named after George Washington and Christopher Columbus and is one of the oldest cities in the United States.

Washington D.C. is a fast paced city that is constantly evolving. Being the home to the President and the United States federal government, this city is the political centre of the United States and is sometimes referred to as the political capital of the world. With more than 20 million tourists a year, Washington is one of the most visited cities in the world.

There is so much to explore in this beautiful city including The White House, The United States Capitol and a wide variety of art galleries and museums.

The United States Capitol Building, often referred to as the Capitol Building, is home to the United States Congress and the federal government. Located on Capitol hill, this beautiful building was designed by William Thornton in 1800 as the result of him winning a design competition.

View from the Lincoln Memorial

The Washington Monument is an obelisk situated on the National Mall. This monument was built to commemorate George Washington, the first President of the United States. Construction of the monument was suspended in 1848 due to lack of funds and materials. There is a slight difference in the colours of the marble used which can be seen about half way up the monument.

Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln memorial was created two years after the President was assassinated. The statue of Abraham Lincoln stands at 19 feet tall and is located at the on the west side of the National mall.

Martin Luther King Jr’s famous ‘I have a dream’ speech was delivered at the memorial in 1963.
