American democracy is rigged

I don’t understand. Is the author saying that non-party members should be able to vote in the primary for a party that they are not a member of?

For that matter, the author’s complaints about the lack of democracy ring hollow when there’s no mention of the un-democratic way a lot of caucuses are run.

But anyway — if the author really thinks that establishment candidates win all the time, then I’d like to hear how Trump is winning right now, or how Barack Obama won in 2008. Both were outsider candidates when they started. Otherwise, this op-ed seems like the sour grapes of someone who just read the Wikipedia article on primary procedure.
