Hello, World!

I’m taking up writing for two reasons.

The first and obvious is a lack of a ‘digital footprint’ with which I may bolster my personal brand. People these days are bustling with digital social profiles, professional and otherwise, public or secret, markers of their digital existence that make up this new frontier of our humanity and the digital landscape. In talking with planners and industry peers, and in keeping with the now 21st century habit of documenting oneself online, it seemed appropriate to reserve a place on the web that I could point to and say, ‘this is me, and this is how I think’.

The second shies away from my creating a ‘marketable self’, and hits a deeper chord. I wanted to begin writing simply because I missed it — and I couldn’t think of a better time. It seems my whole life, I was tasked with writing about everything from Chaucer to Globalization, and was ‘rewarded’ by the keepers of one’s fate in school — professors — so long as I neatly expressed my ideas within a framework or medium I had not myself chosen. I’d like to try my hand at writing on my own terms.. I’ve never really explored ideas or writing styles in this way, and I’m excited to uncover things (specifically, ways of thinking) about myself I hadn’t previously known. I think there’s a lot to be learned there.

It’s unfamiliar territory and will take some getting used to.

I’ll be writing about everything from ad industry trends and events, my own musings on how to improve a campaign or new ways of tying brands into compelling narratives. Things like going native mobile. Or how publishers and even individuals are now competing with media companies in creating content. I’ll also be writing about things that I take a particular interest in, like the privacy of the internet user, or the diminishing barriers to entry in every industry from music to startups, and the role of technology in shaping our ways of connecting (and therefore, culture).

So whether you’re an employer seeking to hire a VERY qualified and bright young man, welcome. And to the redditor who stumbled through a series of obscure hyperlinks to get here, nice to meet you.

And thank you for reading.
