In this blog post, I will talk about a TV series named “Normal People” which made a great influence on me when I finished and even which I think is the best series of this year. The series is based on Sally Rooney’s novel of the same name and aired in April 2020. This series goes around the complex relationship between Marianne and Connell, who live in Ireland, County of Sligo where I have been to a few years ago. Hettie Macdonald, as well as Lenny Abrahamson, who won the Oscar for Best Director for his movie Room in 2015, sits in the director’s chair of the series, which is a co-production of BBC and Hulu. The shooting of the series took place in Sweden, Italy, and Ireland. Normal People is actually a 12-episode mini-series and each episode is about 25–30 minutes long. Normal People looks like a teenage drama at first, but then it goes much deeper and allows us to witness the ordinary processing of an ordinary subject. Incredibly well-written multidimensional characters have been entrusted to very good actors, and it turned out to be a very high-level result.
Although Producer Ed Guiney said that they did not prepare any other story outside of the book and that the series would not continue, the international popularity of the series raised the possibility to continue. Even, two short videos named “Normal People Confessions” and “Older Normal People” were released on Youtube after the end of the series. The first one is a crossover with the TV series “Fleabag”, and the characters confessed theatrically about each other and their past. In the second video, as the name suggests, a short section of Connel and Marriane was shared. I think you will experience a lot of emotional changes in the series, but sadness will always be at the forefront. Cinematography, colours and dialogues are just as successful as acting. It is definitely a slow-moving series, but it can be easily influenced by it. One of the best quality productions of this year, you should definitely check it out.
