Learning to Ride the Waves
Have you ever had one of those days where everything just seems to go wrong? From the moment you wake up in the morning till the time you rest your head on your pillow, things just didn’t go right. To make matters even worse, you wake up and it happens all over again. It just seems like everything that can possibly go wrong, does. We all experience moments in our lives like this. It happens to the best of us. Periods like this can really sabotage our goals and aspirations in life. How do we stay focused even when it feels like there is absolute chaos everywhere? Well, here are a few things you can do that will really help you ride those waves of life’s challenges instead of experiencing a wipe out.
Don’t give in to the doubts
Your mind will try to tell you all kinds of things when you experience a period of strong adversity. Always remember that before you experience breakthrough results, adversity will be there. You will begin to hear statements of doubt that you’ve heard from those around you and those from your own inner voice as well. Do not give in to these thoughts as they only contribute to a self defeating attitude. Continue to push forward towards whatever you are trying to accomplish. Doubt is an evil seed. If you water it with your negative thoughts and the thoughts of other people, it will begin to sprout. Once this branch appears it starts to grow and develop other branches. Instead of one branch or one negative thought, you now have several! Soon these negative thoughts start to bear fruit. In this case, fruit represents your actions. Those actions will be self sabotaging, self defeating, and completely against anything that will contribute to the goals you want to achieve. They lead to depression, fatigue, lack of motivation, and a host of many other things that will destroy the opportunity you have to achieve your goals. The waves of life are strong but don’t give in to doubt. Plant a seed of positive affirmations that tell you that this is only a test and merely a speed bump on your way to accomplishment.
Don’t Look Back
When obstacles hit you unexpectedly, it is very easy to look back on the past. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking about past failures. We start telling ourselves that things would have been different if we did this or that. Maybe our relationships or financial situations would be different. There is nothing you can do about the past. The best thing you can do is learn from those experiences. Failure is simply just “feedback”. Learning experiences that bring us a step closer to the person we aspire to be. As long as you are alive and breathing, you have the opportunity to completely change your future. The past does not have to repeat itself. Dwelling on your past mistakes keeps you in a state of mind that prevents you from looking towards the future. You won’t be prepared for any future or present opportunities if you’re spending most of your time crying over spilled milk. Take accountability for your past actions, and use your past experiences as a guide to shape your future. Our past mistakes are actually a road map which helps us determine what we should and should not do in the future. Learn from the past, acknowledge the past, and move on.
I know this is easier said than done but it is definitely a must. There isn’t anyone in this world that hasn’t struggled with staying positive at some point in their lives. Sometimes, unexpected things occur in our life. In some cases, they can be very devastating. This is when our minds are really put to the test. No matter what happens we have to look at the positive side of things. Trust me, there is always a positive even though it may seem like the world is completely crashing down on you. The way we look at things can really determine how quickly we bounce back from those tough moments we experience. One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to constantly feed your mind with positive things. I, for example, pray very often, read books, limit the amount of TV I watch, and I make it my business to surround myself with positive people. Regardless of your lifestyle or religious preference, you must keep yourself away from negativity. Feeding your mind negative thoughts is the equivalent of giving your computer a virus. Our brains are the most advanced computers ever created. Let’s make sure we store the right information in our hard drives. We need as much positive data as we can to combat the tough moments that will inevitably happen in our lifetime.
Life definitely has its curve balls from time to time. However, we have a choice on how we wish to respond to whatever gets thrown our way. You can react in the best way possible when you program yourself to focus on finding the positive in every situation. This will keep you moving forward even when the going is tough.
Here’s to developing a character so strong that you will achieve any goal in your life even while you’re riding the waves!
