Homework week 2
- Takeaways:
a) DATA JOURNALISM HANDBOOK: When creating a data set, I have to look at all the information in front of me and ask: does this make sense?. I shouldn’t just trust the numbers, I need to make sure I am not overlooking anything that might jeopardize my results as well as look closely into anything that seems strange.
b) CLEANER, SMARTER, SPREADSHEETS: Making a spreadsheet is like writing a story — I have to think ahead, organize the plot since the beginning, make sure it carries the same meaning throughout and a conclusion that makes sense. I also have to be concise in the way I present my story and not assume that others will understand everything the same way I do, which is why I have to work hard in being clear.
2. NY State criminal justice statistics:
- Index Crimes Reported to Police by Region: 2008–2017
a) Year with the smallest index of reported crimes: 2017
b) Year with the biggest index of reported crimes: 2008
c) Crime with the most number of reports: Property crimes.
d) Biggest index of violent crimes: New York City.
e) Biggest index of property crimes: Non — New York City.
I can see that there is a constant decrese in crimes (both property and violent crimes) through the years 2008 to 2017 in the whole state, which means that there is an increase in the security. Also, the number of crimes in New York City is almost as big as the overall number of crimes in the rest of the state.
