Journey Update

Over the last 3 months, after I decided to move from Flipkart to do something in education — I have been trying to build an understanding of Education. A quick realisation is that the field is massive, and there are tons of opportunities. Its also quite complex, because understanding cause & effect is quite tough — at least for me — a rank outsider. Just as an example — if the curiosity levels in most engineering students is low — is that a problem with the engineering curriculum and how its taught or the conditioning that has happened over the 12+ years has killed most of curiosity or that most students studying engineering, have no interest in it — its just a means to a good job.

As I grapple with a lot of these, I have done a few things to try and identify a good problem space for myself.

  • I am meeting people who have been in education & have created good impact. Have been lucky enough to meet 35–40 people over last 3 months — A lot of them have been really awesome. If you know of some, people who could help me learn about the space do drop me a comment.
  • I am reading up, about education and about seemingly unrelated areas like economics, cultures & politics (along with a heavy dose of Asimov)
  • I have decided to give myself 6 months indecision. 6 months of learning, reflection, travel, volunteering & just chilling — a period where I am not going to start doing stuff. In this period I hope to build my intuition in the space.

I have been thinking about how could I share my learnings in this phase, and have been oscillating between — sharing every meeting that I have, and every book I read to the other extreme of waiting for complete clarity to emerge. The fact that I haven’t posted so far on the topic, suggests that I have unconsciously chosen the latter — but I hope to change that.
