Kicking My Way Out of a Rut in 2018
For the past year, my medium profile has lain dormant.
That isn’t to say that I haven’t been writing — in fact, I’ve been writing almost daily. I’ve written personal essays, landing page copy, product descriptions, and even a brochure to help sell cremation urns to funeral homes.
I’ve learned how to shorten my copy and include keywords that look natural. I’ve learned how to keep deadlines (sometimes) and how to mentally clock out at the end of the day. I’ve worked briefly in a marketing agency, and taken the plunge (again) into full-time freelancing.
I’ve lost contracts and rebuilt bridges that I previously burnt. I’m still learning.
What I haven’t done this past year is continue posting to Medium — a wonderful platform that gave me my start a little over a year ago. It gave me the confidence to publish my written work — to take ownership of the writing I was proud of (and even some that I’m not super proud of), and get that work in front of an audience.
As I sit here with my cat on my lap, counting down to 2018, I’ve decided to recommit myself to writing about things that matter to me and the lessons I’ve learned in what continues to be the early stages of my freelance writing career.
There are a lot of things that I want to write about that I’ve never lent the time to and in 2018, you’ll hear about all of them.
So that’s it — that’s the goal. Write more, read more, publish more.
Here’s to a more productive and exciting 2018.
