A food dehydrator uses heat and airflow to remove the water content from whatever you put in it. It’s a wonderful contraption that can bring new life and tastes to many foods – especially fruits – right from your kitchen.
Food dehydrators are generally sold in a circular or rectangular shape. While they both use fans, air vents, and heating elements to run, they do so in different ways. The circular models blow heat vertically through the unit through the top or bottom while the rectangular units dehydrate the foods horizontally through vents on the sides.
If you get a circular unit, it’s probably best to rotate your trays periodically throughout the dehydration time to ensure even drying. If you’re looking for more of set and forget operation, you should probably invest in one that’s rectangular in shape. You might also want to consider investing in a dehydrator that has a timer attached to it with an automatic shut off. That way you won’t have to worry about whether or not you’re home when the food is finished.
There are two main brands of food dehydrators - Nesco and Excalibur. You may see other dehydrators on the shelf by other companies that cost less than one by one of the two main names - you’re better off spending the extra few dollars and getting a food dehydrator by a trusted name. That way, you know that if anything goes wrong, you can rest easy knowing that any warranty your dehydrator has will be respected and valid.
