The Gateway to the living and the dead -Mitla

Throughout my travels in Mexico, I have visited many archeological sites. But this one takes the cake.

Mitla.

An easy bus ride along Highway 190 about 44 km southeast of the City of Oaxaca you will arrive to the small town of San Pablo Villa de Mitla and at the most beautifully preserved site of “Mictlan” (Nahuatl) or “place of the dead” in Mexico. Originally the Zapotec tribes attribute this sacred place as the “place of rest” or “Lyobaa”.

Mitla is referred to by many names and with a 10,000-year history, its overwhelming beauty and tranquility will captivate your imagination and intrigue your inner explorer as you discover the small but very intrinsic buildings located here.

The Mixtec eventually invaded the sacred burial site originally designed by the Zapotec tribes, growing the population to 500,000 at around 950–1520 AD. They developed not only sophisticated constructions for their places of worship but also a writing system, two calendar systems, and advanced agricultural cultivation.
