Very, VERY important. In my personal opinion, having a successful marketing strategy is almost more important than having an amazing product. Think about how much junk we’ve bought over the years. Someone managed to get us to buy that junk. How? Successful marketing. Imagine hiding a thousand dollars with a post-it note on it saying “take me” versus leaving a dollar out in the open without even having a label on it. Which of the two options for free money is more amazing? The thousand dollars of course…but that doesn’t matter because people don’t know it’s there. My guess is a thousand singles scattered around town will go faster than the $1000 stack tucked away somewhere. Even a couple thousand singles would disappear more quickly. If companies want to be successful, they really need to understand the deep importance of marketing their products AND their business as a whole. They need to test their strategy just like the scientific method. When something isn’t very effective, change it and test again. It’s also critical to realize how quickly the world we live in changes, and keep that in mind with plans. You’ve got to be adaptable and do your best to foretell the future trends before your competitors do. Business is a continual arms race!
