Filevault login process

The best way to keep your personal data safely is using Filevault, which allows you to encrypt your entire hard drive.

We’re using the second version of Filevault in current operating systems (macOS Lion (10.7) or later). First version of Filevault (Which is called Legacy Filevault) was working like encrypting the Home folders, instead of encrypting the entire disk. In opposition to that, Filevault 2 is encrypting entire disk. And that means, it’s encrypting your data, all apps and operating system as well.

Some users might find a Filevault encrypted Mac booting way faster than non-encrypted one. Because there’s a second or two, between pressing the power button and facing the login screen.

The fact is, it’s not relevant with “a faster computer”. The booter files which is used for booting the macOS is located in the Filevault protected disk. At the very beginning macOS should recognize you as an authorized user to decrypt the disk. If you submit your credentials correctly macOS will continue to boot.

When you attempt to login a non-Filevault system, you’ll see the login screen after all system related components successfully initialized (such as, booter, kernel, launchd etc).

The same thing happens when you try to use a startup modifier key to access the Single User Mode or Recovery partition. You’ll see the login screen for authorization first, and then you’ll proceed to what do you want.

Buna karşılık Filevault ile şifrelenmemiş bir sistemde booter, kernel ve launchd gibi bileşenler yüklendikten sonra login ekranı kullanıcının karşısına gelir.

Benzer bir şekilde, herhangi bir klavye kısayolu ile Mac’inizi farklı açılış modlarından birinde (Recovery, Single User Mode gibi…) açmayı denediğinizde o açılış moduna geçmeden önce kendi kullanıcı bilgileriniz ile Filevault şifrenizi açmak için login ekranı ile karşılaşırsınız.
