How IT can teach you to be bigger on the inside rather than the outside?

I first heard about John Maxwell through Maxwell Leadership Podcast, which I greatly recommend listening to. It introduced to me the concept of being “bigger on the inside than the outside.” This means that your character, integrity, and values should be more important to you than your appearance, status, or success.

Then I thought, how my work can teach me to be bigger on the inside than the outside. So here it is some examples on how IT and programming can teach you to be a better person:

• IT teaches you to be humble. When you’re working on a complex IT project, you quickly realize that you can’t do it all yourself. You need to rely on the expertise of others and be willing to learn from them. This can be a humbling experience, but it’s also an opportunity to grow as a person.
• IT teaches you to be resilient. Things don’t always go according to plan in IT. When something goes wrong, you need to be able to pick yourself up and keep going. This requires resilience and a positive attitude.
• IT teaches you to be a team player. IT projects often involve teams of people working together to achieve a common goal. This requires teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills. When you learn to work effectively with others, you’re also developing your character and becoming a better person.
• IT teaches you to be ethical. IT professionals have a lot of power and responsibility. They need to use their power ethically and responsibly to protect the data and systems that they oversee.
• IT teaches you to be lifelong learners. The field of IT is constantly changing, so IT professionals need to be committed to lifelong learning. This requires curiosity and a hunger for knowledge. Furthermore, acknowledging that you are always a learner and be humble about your knowledge, certainly will open doors for you to become greater.

Other than those, you can always make a difference by sharing your knowledge and teach others. Ultimately, being bigger on the inside than the outside is about choosing to focus on the things that are truly important in life, such as your character, integrity, and values.
