Reshma, thanks for your comment, and for raising the issue of inequality in the tech industry. When I was getting my degree in computer science in the 1980s, there weren’t a lot of women in my classes. Now, 30 years later, it turns out that was almost the high point for gender equality in the field! I do think the way unpaid work gets divided up is part of the problem. It’s subtle, and in many cases we don’t even realize it, but girls are not encouraged to explore, to tinker, and to indulge in what may look like aimless curiosity. When we stop sending girls messages that they should spend their time on a narrow range of pursuits, they will finally be free to go wherever their passion leads.
