I think the key thing raised in Kel’s post is not that the gesture to open the door is unwelcome, but that the assumption that she should divert her path to go through an open door is something that a man would find hard to understand. I very much appreciate a door opened, provided it is a door I wish to go through. I do not enjoy feeling obligated to change my plan or course to validate someone else’s apparently kind offer, male or female. The difference is that I can say to women, ‘No thank you, I’m going this way’ without being roundly abused for being ungrateful.
