This photo was taken by my mum’s friend called Sue who lost her battle with cancer. She is remembered. (Oxford, 1989)

A BLUE KANGAROO

I’ve been blessed by a beautiful mother,

Who did not show me right from wrong.

I’ve been blessed by her because,

She never stood with a throne.

Right and wrong was never the way people were,

The place they were born,

Was none of our concern.

Neither the personal choices they made,

Had any kind of aspect I would like to change.

……………………………………………………

She never told me not to be a racist;

Since racism didn’t exist within her,

I did not realise it could exist ever.

……………………………………………………

I was quite surprised to tell you the truth,

When I went out there and heard all these youth.

Unspeakable things they used to say,

Who taught them these I wondered?

Was it the devil or was it the respectable elder?

………………………………………………….

Black or white,

Brown or blue,

I don’t think I would have a racist feeling even towards a kangaroo.

………………………………………………….

Neutral was always what she taught me to be,

Neutral towards whoever I may see.
