I fell in love today…

… it was as I was leaving uni. My lecture finished early and I wanted to walk on the grass and look at the river.

There was a storm coming, I could feel the air prickly with the promise of it.

As I turned to check the road I saw him. Walking down the steps, too far away to talk to. Older. I couldn’t decide if he was a student or a teacher.

We looked at each other and I felt as if I had been jolted. He smiled; I did not.

I crossed the road as he walked closer, looking over my shoulder but he was already headed in the other direction, staring down at his phone.

I stood on the grass looking out over the river. Blue fragments broke up the heavy clouds; the water a dark pewter.
