The “bubble-room” was where everyone went when they were naughty. That was what I called the room. It was stark white.
Someone planned this room, anticipating that someone was going to use it. Perhaps there were medical or psychiatry journals that spoke about the benefits of using such a bubble-room. Maybe:
”Calms the patient considerably. Statistical analysis shows that the space is therapeutic for those who cannot hold a fulltime job or function in reality.”
Of course, who knows if any of these doctors or psychiatrists who wrote such an imaginary journal article ever sat in there at all. Probably…
Like millions of parents during this pandemic, I’ve let my 5 year old daughter watch a lot of YouTube. However, this activity has been more than just a way to fill time. It has served a number of purposes during our unprecedented number of hours at home. YouTube has provided an emotional outlet for my daughter. It has also influenced how we interact as a family.
YouTube in many ways has replaced idle television viewing that my generation did as children. Rather than sitting in front of the “boob tube,” my daughter watches essentially short independent movies on her Kindle…
Every day I see someone say online, “Stay home if you are scared.” It’s the go-to response from mask-deniers, especially if they think the pandemic is just a hoax.
After seeing this way too many times, I couldn’t stand it. I stopped yelling at the TV for a moment (after my daily dose from the reality shit show, called the Trump briefing) and decided to go for the jugular. I responded:
Here’s another way to look at it: if you don’t want to wear a mask, stay home. If you don’t care if you get it, stay home. If you…
My newest piece is about the “bubble-room” in a mental hospital.
If you don’t know, a bubble-room is a form of isolation, reminiscent of the padded room.
I reflect on…
During the Democratic primary, I was a Pete Buttigieg supporter. I liked Amy Klobuchar as well. I did not like Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders. I even — half-jokingly — told my husband that if Bernie won the nomination, I would vote the third party. Even though I knew that would essentially be a vote for Trump. And I did not want him to have a second term.
Ironically, I didn’t like Kamala Harris because I thought she treated Joe badly during a debate. But, other than that, I never gave her a second thought.
Biden was my back-up choice…
News about updating Pop Off and request for input
Hi,
I’m the owner of Pop Off on Medium. I’d like to start a dialogue about revamping Pop Off.
Currently this is what I’m mulling over:
I am thinking about restructuring from a “everyone is an editor” mode to having a few editors. We’ve grown so big that it’s not manageable to be completely democratic or decentralized.
For example, I’m getting so many submissions for new writers, I don’t ever have time to vet people and then add them. …
The pandemic is scaring the bejeezus out of us adults and our children aren’t immune to the stress caused by that fear. Whether they directly fear it themselves or are just feeling our reactions, their emotions are completely understandable.
Some kids get depressed, act out, can’t sleep, or are anxious. And then there is my child — who has decided to become a villain.
It all started with her watching the “Soty” family, short for “Shot of the Yeagers,” on YouTube. In her eyes, they are the most energetic, fun family — for example, they have the propensity to do…
“Is the ‘shit show on yet?’”
That’s my husband, every day this past month. And I would dutifully bring up YouTube TV on our television and “turn the dial” to any cable news channel.
On the right hand corner of the screen, it would inevitably say “Live: coronavirus task force coming soon.”
Yep. The Trump show was about to come on.
Then from an hour to three hours, depending on the mood of the star, we’d watch in abject horror. It’s like a train wreck you can’t avoid, a car crash you can’t look away from.
Depending on your political…
The majority of most countries are being deeply affected by the current viral pandemic, Covid-19. Many of the population are under stay at home orders. And one of the things that is keeping us sane:
Pop Culture
It’s no wonder. Music, television and film entertain us, distract us, comfort us, occupy us. We are starved for content as we hunker down and try to ride out this scary wave.
On top of all this, our pop culture will be irrevocably marked by this pandemic. In some ways, it already has changed content. We can see this in talk show hosts…
