I was born and raised in Ohio and was taught about the civil war in school. When my family moved to the south I was amazed at how prevalent the civil war still is. From a still underlying dislike of northerners to preserving their heritage and pride. When I first heard of statues being removed my thought was their removal won’t erase history. A white persons response. I think it was the mayor of New Orleans that “woke” me when he said the citizens of the city shouldn’t have to walk past a reminder of their history of enslavement. I hadn’t looked at it that way and appreciated that perspective. I still view the confederate flag as a symbol of hate, and for those that defend it as heritage or pride should strongly protest its use by white supremacists
