Wow! The last paragraph of Needforname explained the entire rant. I will freely admit to being an ignorant white person in many ways. Whether it was a positive or negative I grew up in a white world. All white community with all white schools. The only black person I knew was Elsie who cleaned our house once a week and took care of us kids when our parents went out of town. She was such a wonderful person and I loved her. I never heard any racist remarks from my parents and Elsie was the only example I had of the black race. I had no reason to hate or fear African Americans. I have always championed the underdog so to speak. From getting tear gassed at age 12 protesting the Vietnam war to hanging a poster of Caesar Chavez in my teenage bedroom and boycotting certain brands of produce. In college I took courses in black history, starting with the three kingdoms of Africa, Native American history, and multiple courses in religion. I still learn something new everyday. Usually it pertains to looking at an issue from a different perspective. I will never fully know or understand what it’s like to be many different things. It’s a continual fight and struggle to not lump or generalize entire groups of people. People are individuals. I’m not afraid to ask a stupid question out of fear of being labeled. Ignorance and fear is what keeps separating us. Whether it’s police, or Muslims, or hate groups. Speak your truth and your experiences. Perhaps another social movement is exactly what’s needed
