It’s a Shame What They’re Doing to Disney’s The Proud Family

It’s been interesting to see the increasing focus on nostalgia and rebooting older television series, and some of these shows — some which recruit the original actors — feel exactly like the original source material.

It’s a strange feeling to watch the continuation of a show that was canceled at least a decade ago just seem to continue on as though it never left. We’ve had a strange reboot of Nickelodeon’s Rugrats, a more adult-oriented ICarly, and not to be left out, Disney brought back That’s So Raven (Raven’s House) and The Proud Family with original (and new) voice actors.

The Proud Family was a reasonable show and I’ve probably seen every episode. It details the misadventures of 14-year-old Penny Proud and her friends, as well as the adults in their lives.

While I did take issue with some parts of certain episodes and some even outright infuriated me, I found it mostly enjoyable.

It was a show that, despite featuring predominately black characters, did not obsessively feature themes of “systemic racism”, such as traffic stops gone exaggeratedly wrong, microaggressions, evil old-timey statues…
