The Naples Zoo Tiger Attack Proves We’re Too Damn Animal Crazy

Advocating torture and sadism does not make you a decent person.

Here we go again. Another big cat attack. It’s time to once again overreact, demonstrate supreme ignorance, and start spouting the same rhetoric of those special interest groups who want to ban pets and burgers. These captive large carnivore maulings are rare and occur less than a handful of times a year, yet the news will paradoxically give them more exposure as a result of this rarity while portraying the events as common to incite a moral panic about caged animals. As the events occurred at a zoological facility that is accredited by an organization that is — for now — respected, a little more leniency was exercised than usual.

Was it wrong for River Rosenquist, who was hired with his company to clean bathrooms and gift shops, to hop a barrier in order to gain unauthorized, direct access to a tiger enclosure and reach through the mesh to feed or pet the animal? That doesn’t require a response, hopefully. Quite literally every “type” of person is pissed off at Rosenquist— from laypeople to animal rights groups, and even people who own big cats as pets — we all agree that what he did was abominable.

Therefore, there’s no need for you to shout it from the rooftops. Everyone agrees…
