Melvin Yong is a Member of Parliament for Radin Mas SMC, and the Assistant Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Melvin's political career started in 2015, when he was introduced as one of the People's Action Party's (PAP) candidates to be fielded in Tanjong Pagar GRC for the 2015 General Election. He served one term as a Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC, before he was fielded in Radin Mas SMC for the 2020 General Election. Melvin is currently the Vice-Chairperson for the Transport Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC), and is a member of the Social and Family Development GPC. In NTUC, Melvin has been the Executive Secretary of the National Transport Workers' Union (NTWU) since 2016, where he has been championing the welfare and wages for public transport workers. Melvin is also also Director, U Associate, which looks after serving the interests of Professionals, Managers, and Executives (PMEs) in the workforce. Melvin is also the current President of the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE), a role that he was elected into on 11 June 2021. Prior to entering politics, Melvin served for 20 years with the Singapore Police Force (SPF). During his tenure, he held various key appointments, such as Commander of Clementi Police Division and Director (Public Affairs). In 2011, Melvin started the Delta League, a youth engagement programme using football to keep youths out of trouble during the June and December school holidays. As of 2016, more than 14,000 youths have participated and benefitted from the Delta League. Melvin continues to serve as a special adviser, providing guidance on the development of the league. Melvin attended The Chinese High School (1985 -1988) and the National Junior College (1989 - 1990). He took on a SPF scholarship in 1992 and graduated from the Nanyang Technological University in 1995 with a degree in Accountancy. In 2005, he received his Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Leicester. Melvin is married with two children.
