Please give us a summary of your Career.
I did my schooling from St Marys Convent Allahabad. Then, I did my B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. from Allahabad University. After that, I got married to an IIT professor and joined him in IIT Kanpur and tried to get a foothold. Salaries were extremely low in 1994, so I worked for free in a bid to learn. My first job paid me 4500/- per month.
I moved from one project to another with better salaries but still no comparison with the Corporate world. However, quality of life was better and stress-free as I was staying with my family on the IIT campus. Therefore, salaries never bothered me.
I have published many research papers, authored a book and I even have a patent in my name. I kept working hard with no expectations.
Every paper published was adding laurels and a pat on my own back. No expectations of promotions.
My husband took a sabbatical in 2015 and we moved to Delhi for my daughter’s 12th board exams. That is when I decided to quit the job and be a homemaker.
I came back to IIT Kanpur in 2017 and ever since been struggling to find a foothold here again. Started a small startup ‘Rush in Style’. As of now, I am in the experimental phase, with no profits; but I am enjoying every bit of this experience. I love researching and trying out new things. It deals with mostly clothing but other fabric related stuff as well.
Please describe your current Job Responsibilities.
As of now, I am a work from home mother. I am mostly into freelancing, which has extremely flexible hours. I work as and when I please.
My job is that of online trading of products. I deal with manufacturers and buyers and act as a link between the two.
I bring a wide range of products for my buyers to go through. This comes after having great negotiations with the manufacturers and sellers.
My products include various types of clothing products, bags, wallets, pillow covers etc.

For this question, I would like to answer in terms of my research career. It’s not the institute that makes you a researcher but your own inherent capabilities and circumstances. I got married to a Professor hence was at IIT and happened to do well. I graduated from Allahabad University. Though the private universities coming up are good as they have a holistic approach whereas old institutes are very specific in their approach. Ashoka University and Shiv Nadar being one of them.
What is the cost of education (post 12th) of this profession at present?
If from a government institute, then it’s not much. Universities like Ashoka University and Shiv Nadar have fees in lakhs per annum almost equivalent to 7 to 9 lakhs per year.

One has to go to vendor to vendor and see what stuff suits best. You have to be careful because vendors tend to often cheat you. It is very disappointing when you don’t get back the desired response. People don’t always feel confident about new ventures especially when it is something really not big. You are constantly stressed in order to manage the little venture. You also have to take care of customer satisfaction at the same time. For instance, if you get a fake product instead of real you have to immediately replace it without making your customer unhappy.
